Entering Ukraine
Under current Ukrainian Customs Regulations a traveler is allowed to bring duty-free the following items:
  • cigarettes - 200 pcs;
  • hard liqueurs - 1 liter;
  • wine - 2 liters;
  • beer - 5 liters,
  • detergents and other surface-active materials - 1 kg.
It is prohibited to import:
  • objects that may cause damage to health or endanger people's or animals' life as well as cause damage to the environment;
  • items that contain propaganda of war, racism and race discrimination, genocide and any other propaganda which is counter to the respective norms of Ukraine's Constitution;
  • items which are imported with the violation of industrial rights or intellectual property.
It is prohibited to take out from Ukraine:
  • the objects for which state subsidies are set, except objects of personal use;
  • objects for industrial use; precious metals, precious stones and items made of them;
  • cultural values with the purpose of alienation; goods and other things which are not subject to veterinary, environmental, sanitary or phytosanitary control.They are allowed to be taken out of the country after they have been checked by respective bodies.

It is allowed to bring into Ukraine:

under condition of oral declaration to the customs body:
  •  foreign currency in cash in the amount not exceeding the equivalent of USD 3,000;
  • checks in the amount of up to USD 3,000;
  • Ukraine's currency - not more than 3,000 Hrn.;
with mandatory indication in a customs declaration:

  • money taken out of Ukraine earlier (previous declaration is required);
  • foreign currency in cash in the amount of USD 3,000 (up to USD 10,000);
  • checks emitted by foreign banks and non-banking institutions in the amount of up to USD 50,000;
  • more than USD 10,000 (in cash and checks) requires a written statement by the traveler.
Travelers must declare all cash and jewelry, regardless of value, upon entering Ukraine. Any undeclared items are subjects to confiscation.

It is allowed to take out of Ukraine:

under condition of oral declaration to the customs body:
  • foreign currency in cash and/or checks in the amount of USD 3,000;
  • Ukraine's currency - not more than Hrn. 3,000;
with mandatory indication in a customs declaration:
  • money brought to Ukraine earlier (previous declaration is required);
  • foreign currency in cash and/or checks in the amount not exceeding the checks emitted by foreign banks and non-banking institutions in the amount of up to USD 50,000;
  • Ukraine's currency in the amount of 10,000 Hrn., of which 5,000 Hrn. in banknotes and non-precious metal coins, 5,000 Hrn. - gold and silver jubilee and commemorative coins;
  • More than 10,000 Hrn. (in cash and checks) requires a written statement of the National Bank of Ukraine.
  • Customs declaration is valid for a year

Time   
Time  count  in Ukraine is 2 hours ahead of  the Greenwich Mean Time.  For the aim of saving electric power supply  in  Ukraine, on last Sunday of March each  year  - the clock hands are shifted 1 hour  onward, and  on  last Sunday of  September   - 1 hour back.    

Streets
Many streets in Kiev were lately re-named. Instead of names of socialist leaders we may see now old names of streets or names from the Ukrainian  history. It makes some  confusions among Kievites and visitors. Don't be ashamed of asking Kievites how to find that or another street. Very friendly people live in Kiev, they respect strangers and render you any assistance.   
Electricity  
Standard voltage in electric networks all  through Ukraine  is  220 volts. Faults in  electricity supply occur very seldom and,  as a rule, are immediately eliminated.    
 
Water   
We do not advise you to drink tap water without filtering. Better buy at the shop Ukrainian drinking  water or mineral water of  import   production. Water in houses are usually central heated, but there is a period (commonly 1-2 weeks at summer time) when water heating is off – the cleaning water pipes is made during this time every year. Mostly all rental apartments are equipped with water heaters.
Credit Cards
Ukraine is still most a cash economy. Traveler's checks and credit cards are gaining wider acceptance in larger cities. Use of credit cards is limited to the better hotels, Western-style restaurants, international airlines and select stores. American Express, MasterCard, and Visa are commonly accepted in Kiev and other big.  
Ukrainian currency
 National currency of Ukraine is Hryvnia (Hrn). There are  money bills by nominal  values 1,2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500  hrivnas and small change coins by nominal values 1,2,5,10,25,50 kopecks and 1 hrv. Payments on the territory of Ukraine are realized only in national currency. You may change any currency for hrivnas  at  exchange  posts  all  over the  city and at the banks.
