The extensive repertoire of Kiev theatres, stretching from the classics to the most innovative performances, caters for all tastes. The opera and ballet lovers are welcome to the renowned National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after T.G. Shevchenko, which is the oldest musical theatre in Ukraine. Those who prefer comedies will surely appreciate plays performed at the Bravo Drama Theatre and Lesya Ukrainka Russian Drama Theatre . Those bored with traditions and classics are invited to the experimental Cherny Kvadrat Theatre and Kyiv Young Theatre. Drama and Comedy Theatre on the Left bankCommonly known as Kyiv's top experimental theatre, it specialises in the works of dramatic Ukrainian and foreign playwrights, ranging from comedy to drama. The theatre produces important new and classical plays of Russian and Ukrainian dramatic art. Its extensive repertoire comprises plays by such playwrights as F. Dostoyevsky, M. Bulgakov and plays of outstanding modern playwrights. The troupe of the theatre strives to ruin the stereotype ideas and to show the audience that the problems discussed in traditional Ukrainian dramas are very up-to-date. If you enjoy comedies then you should definitely spend an evening at the Theatre Koleso. Of course most of the Koleso Theatre’s productions are in Ukrainian, so it helps if you at least understand a bit of the language. Cherny KvadratCherny Kvadrat, or Black Square, is a center of modern theatrical art, where many innovative projects are carried out. The repertoire of the theater stretches from improvisations to modern performances, experimental theatrical projects and even academic plays. The troupe of the Cherny Kvadrat is a prize-winner of many international festivals. The theatre successfully took part in the festivals of amateur theatres and avan-guard theatres. This theatre is a studio, where the young actors study the art of acting and method of improvisation. The Marionette Theatre, which has been working for more than 15 years, has become very popular not only for its performances in Kiev but also for numerous international tours. Peter Stolypin, Russian prime mininster under Tsar Nicholas II, was assassinated here by revolutionaries in 1911. A monument was erected to him but was done away with by the Communists, who also covered up and hid his grave at Pecherska Lavra.
